Khoobsurat meaning beautiful in English, is an Indian movie directed by Shashank Ghosh and co produced by Disney. Film stars vivacious Sonam Kapoor and dashing Fawad Khan in lead roles along with Ratna Pathak Shah, Kirron kher and Aamir Raza Hussain.

Disney’s association with the movie is quite evident as the whole movie is based on a Prince and princess theme, love with no boundaries, and obviously dreams coming true. What else do you need in a Disney movie? Wait…. we were talking about a Bollywood movie, right?

So, we gotta have an over loud Mother (Maa), a strict hitlerish Raani (Queen), and a good for nothing husband of hers. Then to top it all we will need a loud mouth, over vivacious, remember Kareena in ‘Jab We Met‘ kind of female protagonist, who never think twice (not even once), before going out of bounds in interfering with other persons life and sharing her intrusive suggestions. Who else can portray this spirited girl, other than our loud mouth Sonam Kapoor?

She does look pretty convincing in her role, and damn she is beautiful. But my eyes were glued on someone else, whole time. ❤ Fawad Khan. He looks so…..so… 😉

with that Princely charm, he sure steal the heart. Fawad Khan is a Pakistani actor, singer and model, who has debuted in Bollywood cinema with Khoobsurat. While watching the movie, I kept on having that feeling, like I have seen him before, but where. :O Now, I remembered, I have seen him in one other film, ‘Khuda Kay Liye‘, I really liked him in that movie too.

Coming to the story, Sonam is a physiotherapist, working for Indian Cricket Team. She got assigned to a new project; to heal a paralyzed Raja in Rajasthan, India. She soon realize that it’s the strict rule imposed by the Rani (Ratna Pathak Shah), which are making the whole palace gloomy and unfit for Raja’s recovery. She took the matter into her clumsy hands and tried to stir up everything in the royal palace. Little did she know that her life is going to change too, as she falls for the workaholic Prince.

This movie is a loose remake/inspiration from the 1980’s movie of Rekha and Hrishikesh Mukherjee with the same name, Khoobsurat. That was a classic and one of my favorite movie, but this one also does not disappoint much. Although it is nowhere near, classic Khoobsurat; but it sure is watchable and if you are in your sweet sixteen, for sure you will love this one. It’s a cute romantic Disney movie, and will work in that genre.

What doesn’t work for me, is the fact that it’s too much cliche. Nothing new in the plot. We have seen so many movies like this one. All the actors are good, specially Ratna Pathak, who is marvelous. Kirorn Kher, is getting stereotyped in loud Punjabi Mothers role. Sonam and Fawad look good together and have acted well too. I must say though that Fawad don’t get many dialogues to deliver in front of our chatter box Sonam. But no complaints. 🙂

Overall, a nice movie, if you are just looking for some light hearted romantic flick.
I really like this film. I bought the DVD and reviewed the film back in January. While you are right in saying that this film turned no new ground – isn’t that a built in shortcoming of the rom-com?

I have liked Sonam for a while now – especially since RaanJhanaa and Bewakoofyian. I don’t think she made the same kind of impression on me in Delhi Six, Saawariya, or I Hate Luv Stories all of which are from at least five years ago.
I think it is safe to say that she has vastly improved and matured.
By the way, I liked Kareena in Jab We Met too.
Thanks for your fine work on the reviews.
