Dhanteras: More Than Just Gold

Let’s Not Forget Who It’s Really About

Every year, as Dhanteras approaches, everyone suddenly remembers to “buy something auspicious.”
Gold coins, silver bowls, maybe even a new phone — it’s all fair game.

But here’s what often gets missed — Dhanteras actually celebrates Lord Dhanvantari, and NO, he is not the GOD of Wealth.

Dhanvantri is the god of health, healing, and Ayurveda. He appeared from the ocean carrying a pot of Amrit — the nectar of immortality — symbolizing the gift of good health to humanity.

Yet somewhere along the way, the focus shifted. Instead of celebrating Dhanvantari, we started celebrating dhan — wealth. It’s almost ironic, right? The festival that began with the god of health is now more known for shopping deals.

Back in the day, Dhanteras was about thanking Dhanvantari for health and longevity. The tradition of buying metal items came later — it was symbolic of inviting new energy and prosperity into the home. Over time, though, the symbolic gesture turned into a shopping spree.

The gold and silver have their place — but maybe it’s time to remember the real reason behind the day.

Here’s my little remix on Dhanteras that keeps it festive but meaningful — focusing on both Dhanvantari and Lakshmi:

  1. 🪔 Begin with Dhanvantari Puja – Before Lakshmi Puja, light a diya and offer tulsi leaves, ghee, and water while chanting “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Dhanvantaraye Amritakalashahastaya Namah.” A moment to thank him for good health before seeking wealth.
  2. 🌿 Focus on wellness gifts – Instead of only gold or silver, buy something that promotes health — like copper utensils, herbal oils, or Ayurvedic wellness items.
  3. 🩺 Do a health act – Schedule your family’s annual health checkup, donate medicines, or support a health-related cause in Dhanvantari’s name.
  4. 🕯️ Teach the meaning – Share with kids or family that Dhanteras originally celebrated Arogya (health), reminding everyone that wealth has no value without it.
  5. 🌼 Combine prayers – Offer gratitude for both health and prosperity — invoking Dhanvantari for well-being and Lakshmi for abundance.

✨ Health Before Wealth

Because what’s the point of gold if you can’t enjoy it in good health, right?

So go ahead — shop a little, pray a little, and maybe skip the guilt when you treat yourself to that extra sweet. After all, Dhanteras is about inviting an abundance of both health and happiness. 💫
