Tuesday Talkies โ€“ Why I don’t like ‘Haider’

Why I don't like 'Haider'
Why I don’t like ‘Haider’?

There must be something wrong with me…. A critically acclaimed movie, which is actually liked by everyone, and I don’t seem to like it. There must be something wrong with me. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Or, not?

Why I don't like 'Haider'
Haider

‘Haider’, directed by one of the most talented and one of my favorite among the few directors โ€“ Vishal Bhardwaj, is an Indian Bollywood movie, based on Hamlet of legend William Shakespeare. This movie stars Shahid Kapoor in the lead role as Haider. Tabu stars as mother of Haider and Shraddha Kapoor as his love interest. Irrfan Khan and Kay Kay Menon are also in the supporting but pivotal role.

Haider is a story of a Kashmiri boy, who came back to Kashmir from Aligarh, where he was studying; when he hear of his father’s disappearance. Shockingly, he sights his mother, Tabu, in a jovial mood, laughing and singing in company of his Chacha/uncle, Kay Kay Menon. Disturbing, right? ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

He is searching for his father, who disappeared after he was held captive by the Indian armed personnel for assisting terrorists and hiding them in his home. While searching for his father, he embarks on a cruel and shocking discovery of torture and inhumane treatment of Kashmiris by the Indian Army and police. He soon finds out that it was his uncle who was responsible for disappearance and later murder/encounter of his father. Most shocking, his mother could also be a part of it. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Who tells him all this? Enters a Ghost โ€“ Rooh โ€“ Irrfan Khan, who was a cellmate to his father in his captivity. Loved this take on Hamlet.

Whom to trust? Your own mother? Your father’s brother? A terrorist called Rooh, who claims to be your father’s friend? Your own friends Salman & Salman(hilarious stuff they do)? Or, your girlfriend, Shraddha Kapoor, who loves you but is a Indian Police/Army officer’s daughter?

This story is complex, intriguing, disturbing and immoral. Yes, this is the reason, why I did not liked this masterpiece of a movie. It is immoral of me to like this.

It’s a fantastic movie, almost a masterpiece from Vishal Bhardwaj. It is critically acclaimed. Almost every critic has praised it to the point of giving it a 5 out of 5 stars. I will not give it 5 but will give a 4 if I can just neglect the whole Kashmir angle. It is indeed a good movie.

My problem starts the moment, a doctor who is hiding terrorists in his compound, irrespective of his wife’s discontent, is shown as a Hero, as a savior. You are made to feel sorry for that creature who is harboring terrorists. ๐Ÿ˜ก You know why, because you are watching the movie from his son’s angle. But, tell me, in real world, whom would you call a hero โ€“

  • a Mother who has sent his son away to study, so that he will not get involved in terrorists activities, this after she notices him hanging out with some of this genre?
  • Or, a Father who didn’t think twice of his wife and his son’s future, before inviting terrorists to his home?

My problem with this film does not end here.

Mother, Tabu, is shown as if she was some kind of immoral, who was behind his husband’s murder, and as soon as he disappear, she started romancing and married his husband’s brother. Later, it was shown though, that she was innocent in her husband’s death but โ€“ it was not clear, why she still stayed with Uncle even after finding out that he was responsible for her husband’s death? Story also did not clearly depict, her problems with first marriage and why she drifted so quickly towards Uncle who was flirtatious in nature all along?

Showing Indian Army in bad light. This is the crucial issue with this film. I don’t have any issue if you show, how they are torturing innocent Kashmiris and doing encounters in the name of action of Jehadi movement. But, are you also showing, what those terrorists are doing? You are showing that terrorists are attacking only to defend themselves, and Army is killing them even when they are unarmed and in prayers. You are showing that Army is conspiring with local lawyer/politician to propagate false agenda, while terrorists like Rooh are messiah, who are actually telling the truth and helping a lost young kid by giving him shelter in Pakistani camps. You are showing that Army is holding illegally all the disappeared Kashmiris, while terrorists are the ones who are giving their dead bodies respect by building their graves. You are telling me, that a common Kashmiri is fed up of frequent search routines done by the Indian Army, but you are not showing what could happen, if there is no search? What would happen, if there is no Army? What could happen to Kashmiris, if there is no Indian Army?

You are showing slogans for Azaad Kashmir. You are asking โ€œHam hain ki ham nahin?โ€. But, where is other side of this story? You are showing story of Haider, but where is Hari and harmeet’s story? Why are you filmmakers always show story from a particular religions (Muslims) perspective? If you are not bothered in showing the other view point, atleast try to balance out the negativity. You could not have made this film, on Kashmir, and in Kashmir, if it wouldn’t be with the help of Indian Army and government. Respect that.

Coming back to filmsy aspect of film. It’s a beautiful film with breathtaking backgrounds and cinematography. Songs by Gulzar โ€“ Muahh. Loved specialy the graveyard song – โ€œaao na, so jao naโ€. Shahid Kapoor has done well. By far, this one is his best performance. But, it was an all in all a Tabu Film.

Tabu is just Tabu. She is incomparable. Her eyes, deep and calm, like ocean. Depth and mystery. You don’t know, whether to hate her, love her or sympathies with her.

Watch this film, just for the pure genius of Vishal Bhardwaj, because he has done the unthinkable by adapting Shakespeare’s Hamlet so beautiful in this story. I wish if he could be content enough to keep Kashmir out of it. Greedy fellow knew that Kashmir is the angle giving it all the masala and viewers too. ๐Ÿ˜›

Saturday Scroll – From Hamlet by William Shakespeare

“What a piece of work is a man,

how noble in reason,

how infinite in faculties,

in form and moving how express and admirable,

in action how like an angel,

in apprehension how like a god!

the beauty of the world,

the paragon of animalsโ€”and yet,

to me, what is this quintessence of dust?”

Frolic Friday โ€“ Curious Case of King Henry’s Wives : Wife # 1 – Catherine

King Henry VIII, was the second Monarch of Tudor dynasty. He was King of England from 21 April, 1509 until his death by 28 January 1547. King Henry was famous for two main reasons โ€“ one for separating Church of England from Roman Catholic Church; and second reason, he was most notoriously famous for, was his Six Wives and their fate bestowed by King Henry. These posts are dedicated to Six Wives of King Henry VIII. It’s not a historical fact or document, rather a conversational satirical viewpoint of ill-fated Queens.

Wife # 1 โ€“ I am Catherine of Aragon, First wife of King Henry VIII

William Shakespeare called me โ€œthe Queen of earthly Queensโ€, now when I am in earth, I think of only that moment when I became The Queen of England.

I was just three-year old, when my parents finalized my marriage. Yes, just three, only a child, and my fate was sealed, as the future Queen of England, and to be wife of Prince Arthur Tudor.

Commoner may think, how lucky we Queens are, but just think of it, I was not even asked about my opinion for marriage. Infact, even if they would have asked me, what would a three-year old child, will say about her marriage. ๐Ÿ˜•

I was happy. Too happy. I was going to be future Queen of England. I danced, learnt all possible languages I can, history, religion, civil, philosophy… there was nothing I had not read about. I was very lucky in that sense, as many of my contemporaries were not allowed to read at that time. Some even said, that I was educated more than my Husband King Henry. ๐Ÿ™„

You must be thinking, how come I was contracted to marry Prince Arthur, and married Henry instead? Well, I did married Prince Arthur, but that pale looking fellow, died in just five months of marriage. We didn’t even consummated our marriage. Urggh…

I should have returned to my home, but how could I have returned to my homeland as a widow, and just a princess, not a Queen. All I was raised-up to be, was to be a Queen. This was the only thing that I knew of โ€“ to be a Queen.

I married Henry, younger brother of Arthur, and six years younger to me.

Actually, he married me. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I didn’t had any say, remember. Henry and his father didn’t wanted to return my dowry (I have bought with me 200,000 crowns as dowry, along with African servants, which I was the first to do so), and to top it all, I was beautiful, way beautiful. ๐Ÿ˜€

I had fair skin and red-golden flowing hair, short height but beauty like that even Thomas Moore said that “There is nothing wanting in her that the most beautiful girl should have.” Told Ya ๐Ÿ˜†

But I was not just an eye candy, I have also fought a war for my King Henry, and won.

Henry was the love of my life. I have only loved my God, other than Henry. Even Henry could not deny my love to him. Only thing that was denied, was a male heir to England’s throne.

I had six pregnancies, but only one, Mary, my daughter survived. None of my son lived. With them, Henry’s love for me, died too. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Why it’s so important to have sons? Why can’t a girl is enough, to carry on your family genes and be your rightful heir? I could never have accepted this undignified ideology towards my daughter Mary. She was the rightful heir, and I told my wishes to Henry also, quite clearly.

Guess what? It was not the question of heir, which was keeping Henry away from me. It was that b#$@h, Anne Boleyn. She was my lady-in-waiting, at my court; and she bewitched my dear husband, to fall in love with her. ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

Not that Henry was innocent, he had 3-4 mistresses before, but this time it was different. He asked me for divorce, and for me to go to nunnery. What??? After 18 years of marriage and one beautiful child, how could he? He even forgot that divorce was not allowed in Catholicism? I will be his wife, till death do us apart.

He was not my sweet Henry anymore. I didn’t even recognized this new Henry, which he had turned into. One who rose against the Roman Catholic Church, and declared himself above the church itself. He was out of control. Killed everyone who believed in Catholic Church and Jesus, burnt them, executed them, hanged them. For what? To marry Anne Boleyn, or to have a male heir, or just to get rid of me? ๐Ÿ˜

He divorced me. Got the marriage annulled, saying it was invalid, as I was his brother’s wife, first.

Punished me, by not allowing me to see my only child, Mary. He kept me in his castles, closed, with nearly no help and money. But, I was always a Queen and never signed to his will of declaring my child a bastard. I didn’t, and will not say, ever, that my marriage was invalid. I was born to be a Queen, and I died, on January 7, 1536, as a Queen.

I just said this to my Dear Husband, as my last words – โ€œLastly, I makes this vow, that mine eyes desire you above all things.โ€

I don’t know if I am โ€œThe Queen of Earthly Queensโ€, as Shakespeare had put it, but I was certainly Queen of England, and will always be remembered as Queen.
